Parents and educators may have been acting with the best intentions, but many of them may have gone too far. Some experts say it was part of a larger movement going on in society at the time to promote mediocrity and lessen the importance of merit. Whatever it was, and whatever caused it, it was an oversight -- one that should not be repeated. Parents today should set higher expectations, demand more of their children, dole out praise more judiciously, and not be afraid of hurting their children's feelings or damaging their self-esteem.
